Curriculum overview: First grade
They are learning that they are unique and special. They also learn that God, our loving Father, gives us many gifts - the most important gift being Jesus. Prayer is an important aspect of life and each day begins and ends with a prayer. Throughout the year, first graders grow to understand the real meaning of holidays, like Halloween and All Saints Day. On November 1st, each student picks their favorite saint, dresses like them and gives their classmates a brief summary of their lives. Mardi Gras, Lent and Thanksgiving (when first graders prepare a feast for their parents) are also special occasions. One of the most beautiful celebrations performed by our first-grade classes is the Nativity Play put on as part of their advent service. Even in first-grade, community service is a part of being an All Saints student. The Annual Food Drive, neighborhood clean up, Giving Tree and Catholic Charities 100 Ways in 100 Days Project are just a few of the activities they're involved in. First graders, along with their fifth-grade partners, also work each year to send children with Muscular Dystrophy to camp. |
