Curriculum overview: Second grade

Students at All Saints' celebrate Dr. Suess' birthday during Read Across America.

"All things bright and beautiful, All creatures great and small, All things wise and wonderful The Lord God made them all."

Do you recognize those lines from this famous poem? Second graders at All Saints School can help you identify this poem by Cecil Frances Alexander. Poetry is just one of the many ways the subject of Language Arts is taught in second-grade.

Second graders actively work on growing more independent as they create projects in social studies and science. Math becomes more challenging at this level and includes many hands-on activities.

If you've been to Sacred Heart Medical Center, All Saints School's Partner in Education, you may have seen artwork provided by our second-grade classes. As one of their many Community Service Projects, second graders also create cards for shut-ins and residents of assisted living centers. They have also begun helping their sixth-grade partners with the Companions in Care luncheons. The Companions in Care group is organized by Our Lady of Fatima Parish and gives seniors an opportunity for socializing.

The annual Thanksgiving Feast, put on with the first-grade classes, allows parents to see first-hand the creativity of their children. Students make costumes and actually prepare and serve the lunch.

As always, the center of learning in second-grade is Jesus. This focus is woven through every subject and even extends to discipline. Students learn about God through scripture, weekly Mass and other spiritual activities like the annual Kids Care Retreat.
