Curriculum overview: Fifth grade
In science, students study matter, earth, plants and space. At the end of the space unit they create and launch their own rockets. A project in American History helps students learn research of another kind. Fifth graders are asked to do a detailed report on a particular event or person. Reading includes exposure to many forms of literature including fiction, non-fiction and poetry. As students move onto the second semester, they focus on comprehensive vocabulary, inference and prediction as they study novels as a class. Fifth grade religious studies focus on what it is to be a Catholic. Parts of the Mass, learning new prayers and the special gifts each one of us has been given by God are all reinforced through the study of the scriptures. They also raise funds, along with their first-grade partners, through licorice sales to send kids with Muscular Dystrophy to camp. |
