Curriculum overview: Sixth grade

Students learn how to test the PH levels of water on a trip to a local pond with members of the state's water quality team.
Sixth graders at All Saints Catholic School focus on developing higher level thinking skills, more mature writing skills and better study habits. These skills help students make the transition from memorizing information to using it to analyze, evaluate, draw conclusions and develop their problem solving abilities. As with fifth-grade, students are assigned a homeroom and rotate for various classes.

Religion class emphasizes the Old Testament and Christ as the fulfillment of God's promises. Stories and lessons are read to enrich students in scripture and doctrine and to guide them toward using moral principles in their lives.

Class Community Service Projects include raking leaves for seniors as part of Catholic Charities Chore Service program and helping out at Our Lady of Fatima's Companions in Care luncheons by decorating, participating at Mass and serving meals.

In science, many hands-on activities are offered to increase the students' knowledge of biomes, human anatomy, basic physics and chemistry. Math builds on earlier lessons with increasingly sophisticated problem-solving challenges.

An overview of world history involves students in researching, writing reports, reading novels and map making. The Language Arts curriculum focuses on the six traits of writing, grammar, and practicing various forms of writing. Reading combines novels with lessons on special characteristics such as setting, plot, characterization, vocabulary and point of view.
