Curriculum overview: Kindergarten

Kindergarten teacher Ashley Thielman reads to her class.

Our kindergarten Class is staffed with one teacher and an aide when needed.
The kindergarten curriculum at All Saints includes:

Religion:
Our religion programs are called "We Celebrate the Seasons" by the Brown Publishing Company and "Faith First" by Resources for Christian Living.
We are going to be working on many activities to learn that God loves each of us, (and everyone else, too!) and that God has given us many gifts. We will learn that we are part of God's family and that Jesus is our Brother. We will be learning about prayer and about God's forgiveness.

Christian Living
The Family Life Issues program is integrated into our year. The concepts taught are uniqueness, self-esteem, positive self-concept, loving and being loved, responsibility, commitment and family love.

Math
Our math textbook is entitled "Mathematics: The Path to Math Success". The units that we cover are: Position, Classification, Patterns and Comparison, Numbers 0-5 and 6-12, Comparing and Measuring, Geometry and Fractions, Time and Money, Adding and Subracting, and exploring Larger Numbers.

Reading
We will using the "Open Court" Kindergarten reading programs. The children continuing on into 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grades in this program. This program stresses phonics, literature and thinking skills.

Science and Social Studies
We will be working on various themes and units this year. Some of them are animals, nutrition, weather and seasons, plants, shells, rocks, magnets, sound, families, community helpers, and holidays.

Discipline
Kindergarten age children are usually very conscious of rules. They expect others to follow the rules and are not always convinced that the rules are meant for them! We usually try to catch and praise the children for making good choices. This helps steer them all in the right direction. When rules are broken, we try to find appropriate consequences. We will let you know if there are any serious problems.
